What is Create?

CREATE stands for Culturally Responsive Expressive Art Therapy Engagement. It’s a nonprofit dedicated to helping youth, especially those who’ve experienced incarceration or difficult circumstances, explore creativity as a tool for healing, growth, and self-discovery.

But here’s the secret: it’s not really about the art.

It’s about mentorship. About giving youth the space to talk, to feel seen,
and to realize they have a purpose. Not everyone needs to go through pain to do right.
But everybody needs something to believe in. Art just opens the door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to be “good at art” to join?

Not at all. We welcome beginners and advanced artists alike. We start with basic minimalist exercises and let interest grow from there. The focus isn’t on creating “perfect” art — it’s about showing up, exploring, and connecting.

What will my child be doing in the program?

They’ll participate in weekly group sessions where they’ll:

• Prepare pieces for potential exhibits or showcases
• They’ll also have opportunities for mentorship, feedback, and real-life conversations about growth, goals, and choices.

• Learn foundational art techniques

• Create work around different themes

• Hear from guest artists

• Participate in group discussions

How much does it cost?

It’s completely free. We provide all materials — canvases, brushes, paint, and more — at no cost to participants, thanks to our generous donors and partners

Can my child sell their art?

Absolutely. As they grow in the program, participants may have the opportunity to sell their artwork in community showcases and curated exhibitions. All proceeds go directly to the artist.

My child is nervous about joining. Can I come with them?

We love that you want to support them! While our workshops are youth-only to create a comfortable peer environment, we encourage parents and guardians to attend community showcases and stay in touch with our team.
